Music is a wonderful healer and when we suffer from depression and other mental health issues it’s important to feed the mind with uplifting and empowering lyrics and music that soothes the soul.

During a long depressive episode I found music got me moving again, it spoke to me when nothing else could. So here is part 1 of the inspiring songs we will be playing on the new station Peace Within Radio to support your mental health (Part 2 will be coming in September). Along with a summary of why I feel these are very encouraging.

This is a really chilled out track with beautiful lyrics, a reminder that life is not fixed and even when times get tough unexpected experiences and awakenings can take place.

You never know where life will take you

You never know what might have been

In all the things that tried to break you

won’t break you if you let them in.

You never know what life will show you

You never know where you might stray

But in the end what you always knew, was within you, along the way….

India Arie has awareness of life deeply woven into most of her songs. This song is an empowering way to look at the tough stuff in life and also helps us all to realise that we sometimes need to break the shell and feel.

I met a prophet dark as the night
She could see into my soul
Said she’d been watching and had some advice
She said shadows make you whole
A life without pain is a wolf in sheep’s clothes
Cause if you listen to the lessons that it holds
You’ll find the gold
Child its time to break the shell
Life’s gonna hurt but its meant to be felt
You cannot touch the sky from inside yourself
You cannot fly until you break the shell…

When life becomes just too much, this song is incredibly encouraging, it touches the soul when we hit those dark times of depression. So please hold on. If you need to reach out for help, be it a friend, family member or see a Doctor and ask to see a therapist. You are worthy of living this life, we need you here.

I know it’s all you’ve got to just, be strong
And it’s a fight just to keep it together, together
I know you think, that you are too far gone
But hope is never lost
Hope is never lost

Hold on, don’t let go
Hold on, don’t let go

The beauty industry and media has many of us, especially women, feeling less than and not enough in terms of outer beauty, when we feel inadequate or have an eating disorder this song really does help.

She just wants to be beautiful
She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits
She craves attention, she praises an image
She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor
Oh, she don’t see the light that’s shining
Deeper than the eyes can find it
Maybe we have made her blind
So she tries to cover up her pain and cut her woes away
‘Cause cover girls don’t cry after their face is made…

I first time I heard this song was on the series Sense8 and was moved by its beauty, but also by the lyrics. A reminder to embrace life, no matter what is happening but to see what we can make most out of what we are given.

I had a dream that all of time was running dry
And life was like a comet falling from the sky
I woke so frightened in the dawning, oh, so clear
How precious is the time we have here

Are we not wise enough to give all we are
Surely we’re bright enough to outshine the stars
But human kind gets so lost in finding its way
But we have a chance to make a difference til our dying day

And you might pray to God or say it’s destiny
But I think we’re just hiding all that we can be…

Sometimes a song just hits you to your core and begins with the rhythm of the song not the words. This song was strangely enough on a TV advert and I just had to hear the full version. It show a gentlemen confident no matter what he looked like on the beach, he was empowered and being who he was. A good reminder for us all.

Can’t you see
I gotta be me
Ain’t nobody
Just like this
I gotta be me
Baby hit or miss
Sitting here
All by myself
Trying to be
Everybody else…

In the relaxing tones of his father, Ziggy brings his Jamaican roots to a song that inspires us to simply be who we are, regardless of what other people think.  Live your life and be true to yourself.

Life has come a long way since yesterday, I say
And its not the same old thing over again, I say
Just do what you feel and don’t you fool yourself, I say
‘Cause I can’t make you happy unless, I am I say I say I
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Got to be true to myself
Day in day out I’ve asked many questions, I say
Only to find the truth it never changes, I say
If you don’t deal with it it keeps killing you a little by little, I say
Call me selfish if you will my life I alone can live, I say I say I…

A more spiritual track, but the words really reach into the soul when we may be feeling rejected or in despair. His haunting and powerful voice soothes and nurtures those listening. Whenever I hear this song I get goosebumps! It’s one of those type of songs. He taps into exactly what many of us want and need.

Don’t give up
It’s just the weight of the world
When your heart’s heavy
I, I will lift it for you
Don’t give up
Because you want to be heard
If silence keeps you
I, I will break it for you
Everybody wants to be understood
Well, I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don’t give up
Because you are loved
Don’t give up
It’s just the hurt that you hide…

I have to smile, because as a British woman, possibly unusually, I do like country and western songs and this song is just so uplifting and loving. It’s like a good friend letting you know what they want for you.

I hope the days come easy
and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you
where you want to go,

And if you’re faced with a choice,
and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one
that means the most to you.

And if one door opens
to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin’
till you find the window…

I came across Empty Hands music and was amazed that someone would be so encouraging as to produce an entire album with lyrics that move and support people. We will be sharing the entire album on the upcoming station so watch this space.

This song helped me let go of trying to control my life and to trust that life finds a way to be whatever it needs to be for each person.

I spent a long time runnin’

I never knew then, what I know I know now,

That the fruits they always comin’

But you can’t go around just knockin’ them down

It takes a long time to showin’

We plant the seeds then, and we look at them now,

But the roots are always growin’

No matter if I’m there or never around…

Whatever grows will grow,

Whatever dies will die

Whatever works will work

Whatever flies will fly,

Whatever fails will fail

What’s meant to soar will soar,

I am planting seeds nothing more
